DUI is not just a fine. In some (maybe all) states, you can lose your license or go to jail. Your insurance rates may increase or you may lose your insurance. At one time, if convicted of DUI in the U.S., you could not enter Canada (I am not sure how well this was enforced or if it is still the law). Finally, most employers will not hire someone who they know has been convicted of DUI, because such a person is (somewhat) more likely to be a person who is drunk at work. To avoid the other consequences of DUI (not just the fine), you probably should get a lawyer even if it costs more than the fine.

yes, absolutley get an attorney. they will speak for you in court. most people get into worse trouble because they do not know how to properly speak for themselves.

in most states, DUI does not result in just a fine. There is jail time, at least 2-3 days, education programs, fines and other consequences. Your license will be suspended and your insurance company will cancel your coverage. If you can’t hire a lawyer and jail time is likely, the court will appoint a lawyer for you. This is all in the U.S. Couldn’t say about other places.
